An Open Letter from the Florida Sunshine Entertainment Association to the Adult Business Community:
As a member of the adult entertainment business community, you recognize both the value of your business and the role it plays in generating tax dollars for your community and for the state of Florida.
We need you to also recognize the value of the Florida Sunshine Entertainment Association. For four years, SEA has successfully (and quietly) defeated 22 pieces of legislation directly aimed against your business. This year is no different and we request the honor of your participation.
Missouri club owners didn’t believe the CDA would happen to them. Ohio adult business owners said the CDA wouldn’t happen to them either, after defeating it six years in a row. They were both slapped with a CDA and its being upheld by the courts. The CDA is now pending in Tennessee, West Virginia and Kansas. It includes but is not limited to: a 6ft. rule, midnight closure, dancer licensing, no signage, no tipping, an alcohol ban and no nudity. MO and Ohio lost its appeals to stop the CDA from taking effect. Businesses have closed under the onerous restrictions and legal battles. Bookstores and clubs have been raided. The CDA has also been passed locally in Nashville, Detroit, Memphis, Cincinnati, Louisville and numerous other municipalities across the U.S.
The Family Policy Council (a.k.a. the Citizens for Community Values), are the original drafters of the “Community Defense Act” against adult entertainment that passed in both Ohio and Missouri. The FL Family Policy Council has rebuilt its coffers this year to $500k. FPC president, John Stemberger, and the FPC Vice President Nathan Dunn belong to the Christian Coalition of Florida along with Rep. Baxley.
The standard practice of your industry for years has been to go to court and fight this legislation, if passed. Unfortunately, many of our best lawyers are in agreement that we are no longer winning these battles in court.
“Either you participate and help us fight…or get out of the adult entertainment industry—an industry that has been so good to all of us over the years. If you don’t participate NOW, the battle and the cost will be prohibitive,”—Jim St. John, Déjà Vu
